Climb Wise: Tips for Safe and Secure Stepladder Use at Home

Step ladders are essential tools for reaching higher areas during joinery projects, decorating, or general home maintenance. To ensure safe and effective use, follow these guidelines:

  1. Choose the Right Ladder: Select a ladder that’s appropriate for your task and weight capacity. Ensure it’s in good condition, with no damaged rungs, loose fittings or wobbling parts.
  1. Set Up on Stable Ground: Place the ladder on a flat, level surface. Remove any clutter or objects nearby that could cause tripping or destabilise the ladder.
  1. Fully Open and Lock: Always fully extend the ladder and lock the spreaders or braces into place. This ensures it’s sturdy and prevents accidental collapsing.
  1. Maintain Three Points of Contact: When climbing or working, keep at least two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand on the ladder at all times to maintain balance.
  1. Don’t Overreach: Keep your body centred between the side rails. Use a tool belt or a long-handled tool to avoid leaning or stretching excessively which could cause tipping.
  1. Be Mindful of Overhead Hazards: Watch out for ceiling fixtures or other obstructions when using an outdoor or ceiling-access ladder.
  1. Avoid Using the Top Step: Only stand on the top two rungs for short periods. The top rung is not designed to support your full weight and can be unsafe.
  1. Climb Carefully: Always face the ladder when climbing or descending and move slowly to prevent slips or falls.

Following these safety tips will help you work confidently and avoid accidents when using step ladders around your house. Remember, safety always comes first!
